Randomness

I pulled out the map, closed my eyes, and placed my finger on the map. I opened my eyes to see where I would be going. Fredericksburg, TX? This is a small city near San Antonio, so the drive would not be too long. But this is how my road trip begun.

Making a random location to mix things up is fun, it takes away a lot of preconceived notions of the location and minimizes subjective choosing.

This same strategy is not beneficial for other aspects of your life. In life you need to have a clear destination as possible, as I wrote about in previous posts. The clearer the vision the better.

However, if you want to mix things up for a day, or a weekend. Randomly picking a destination is fun. You go to a unique place, a place you did not plan on going to. And depending on the distance, you see what you are made of on. Do you have the endurance for an 8 hour road trip? Are you able to get around a town that be smaller than your local supermarket? What will you do when you get there?

Now, for my trip, once I learned of the destination, I decided not to research, like I normally do. Instead I just checked the distance and made sure that I had enough gas and where the next gas stations may be.

Once I got to Fredericksburg I just went with the flow. I had no intentions, no desire, and no direction. It was a basic let the feet start walking, the eyes start wondering, and off I went.

When I saw something I thought was interesting, I stopped and explored more. If my noise and my stomach entered into the equation I let them take control and I tasted, smelled, and ate.

The day as a whole was fantastic and relaxing. I may not have seen all of what Fredericksburg had to offer, but I was not rushed and I felt fulfilled.

If you have never had a day of randomness I suggest you start to add it into your routine. If not once a month at least once a year.
