Find Multiple Streams
I am not much of a fisherman, my grandfather, however, was a master. He would go fishing every day when he retired. He spent a lot of off time looking for new fishing holes.
We did not talk often but when we did he would go into great detail about his plans for the upcoming fishing trips. He got so enamored by fishing that he bought a boat, and a cabin on one of his favorite lakes. My grandmother would often tell me that some days he would skip his coffee and donuts, if you knew him he would never skip this most important part of the day, so he could get out on the water early. Because, it was going to be a great fishing day and he wanted to get in as much time as possible. For the most part his intuition was correct, it was a great fishing day.
When we would talk about fishing I would ask him if the fishing was so good in one spot, why move. He said well, the fish move, so you have to move with them. He would also say that we was not the only person fishing, so the supply could dwindle down. That is why, he said, he is always looking for more fishing holes. Sure he may be happy with the fishing spot(s) that he has found, but he knew at some point those spots will be dried up. Or, in one instance a large amount of rain drenched the area for several days. The rain water flooded into the lake, along with everything in its way, trees, car parts, etc. so the government did not allow anyone on the lake for some time. But my grandfather did not worry, he had his backups.
Just like my grandfather did, we need to make sure we have several streams or resources to fulfill our needs. Many financial gurus mention this when it comes to finances. Having multiple sources of income. I am talking about money here, but I am also talking about other aspects of our lives.
Where do you go for health and fitness? If it is a gym and it is closed, do you have a backup? Perhaps the street and body weight exercises.
Where do you go to relax and unwind? Do you have a favorite restaurant, store, airline, etc?
Look at all aspects of your life and start looking for backups. It is so much better to look for a backup and not need it then to not look and then need it.
Think of my grandfather, what if he did not have any back up fishing holes when the flood happened? If would be scrambling, he may even have to find a new hobby, or like most of his fishing friends, were stuck at home getting depressed. But because my grandfather kept looking, he was able to quickly pivot and go to a secondary fishing spot. Continuing to catch fish and enjoy his favorite past time.
